How can a wind storm cause people to go mad? A special type of mountain wind, föhns are linked to suicides, crime waves, and car accidents. Centuries of folklore and literature describe the wind's bizarre effects on humans. Some people swear they can predict a föhn storm before it arrives. They feel it in their bodies and minds. They're afflicted with strange and disparate symptoms. But definitive proof of such a sickness remains elusive. For every person who swears the wind makes them sick, or manic, there's another who feels no effects.
This is the story of when a föhn hit a Bavarian town last year. It is a journey into the myth, history and science of this bewildering natural phenomenon. A phenomenon that still lies beyond human understanding, in a realm between fiction and fact.
